Pads made from long-staple cotton or lyocell shed less than pads made from short fibers or fiber waste. Cotton also keeps its strength when wet, which matters because pads are used with toner or micellar water. Viscose is soft and absorbent but weaker when wet; in a pad it is usually blended or used in the inner layers.

Most low-lint pads have spunlace outer layers; most high-lint pads are made of loose wadding.

In a spunlace pad, water jets entangle the surface fibers into a fabric, so the surface behaves like cloth. A wadding pad is a soft batt of fibers held together lightly; it feels fluffy but loses fibers when rubbed. Many quality pads combine both: spunlace on the outside for low lint and a wadding core for cushion and absorbency.

Embossing does more than decorate: pressing a pattern into the pad compresses the fibers and locks the layers together.

Pads with a raised pattern on one side and a smoother side on the other (dual-texture) let users exfoliate with one face and soothe with the other. Edges matter too: when pads are cut from a sheet, raw edges can release fibers, so pressed or sealed edges reduce lint at the rim. Lint in face towels vs cotton pads
Face towels and pads shed lint for the same reasons, but towels are usually less of a problem because they are a single spunlace sheet with no loose core.

In towels, lint comes mainly from short fibers and from cutting; cotton and lyocell grades shed the least. If lint is your customers’ main complaint, a spunlace towel or a spunlace-faced pad is the safer choice. See disposable face towels.

How to test lint yourself
Two simple tests show more than any product claim.

Wet rub test. Soak a pad in water or your toner, then rub it ten times across a dark, smooth surface (black glass or a dark cotton cloth). Count or photograph the fibers left behind.

Tape test. Press clear adhesive tape firmly on the pad surface, peel it off and hold it against a dark card. Compare tapes from different samples side by side.
Run both tests on every supplier’s sample in the same way, and keep the photos with your approved sample. For formal testing, ask your lab which standardised linting method suits nonwoven pads.

Avoid absolute claims such as “100% lint-free” — any cotton pad can release some fiber under enough friction.

Q1Why do my cotton pads leave fibers on my face?+
Usually because the pad is loose wadding or made from short fibers. Pads with spunlace surfaces, embossing and sealed edges shed much less.
Q2Are 100% cotton pads more lint-free than blends?+
Cotton has good wet strength, which helps, but construction matters more: a spunlace cotton pad sheds far less than a loose cotton wadding pad.
Q3Does embossing reduce lint?+
Yes. Embossing compresses fibers and locks layers together, especially when combined with spunlace surface layers.
Q4Can a pad be completely lint-free?+
Not in an absolute sense. Describe pads as low-lint and back that with your own test results.
