What does GSM mean on a face towel?
GSM (grams per square meter, g/m²) is the weight of one square meter of the towel fabric, also called basis weight.

A 60 gsm towel contains 60 grams of fiber per square meter. Higher GSM means more fiber in every sheet, so the towel is usually thicker, stronger when wet and more expensive.
GSM is not thickness. Thickness (caliper) is measured in millimeters, and embossing or fiber type can make two towels of the same GSM look and feel quite different.

Sheet weight equals GSM × sheet area in square meters, so a bigger sheet at the same GSM uses proportionally more fiber. A 25×30 cm sheet has 0.075 m², nearly twice the area of a 20×20 cm sheet (0.04 m²).

How texture changes the feel of the same GSM
Texture changes thickness and feel, not weight: a pearl-embossed 60 gsm towel looks and feels thicker than a plain 60 gsm towel, but both contain the same amount of fiber.

Does the fiber change the GSM you need?
Yes. Viscose is weaker when wet than cotton or lyocell, so a 100% viscose towel that will be wrung out may need a higher GSM to match their wet strength.

Cotton gets slightly stronger when wet, and lyocell keeps most of its strength, so both hold up well at 50–60 gsm. Polyester in a blend adds strength at a lower GSM but reduces absorbency. How to specify GSM tolerance
Write GSM as a nominal value with a tolerance, typically ±5%. For example, 60 gsm ±5% accepts 57–63 gsm.

Without a tolerance, “60 gsm” cannot be enforced at inspection. Ask the factory what tolerance its lines hold before you write a tighter one.

Weigh the disc in grams and multiply by 100: a disc weighing 0.60 g is 60 gsm. Use a balance that reads to 0.01 g and cut at least three discs from different sheets.
Check a finished towel
Measure the sheet, weigh it, then divide. A 25×30 cm sheet weighing 6.0 g is 6.0 ÷ 0.075 = 80 gsm. Weigh 10 sheets together for a steadier reading, and lay embossed sheets flat without stretching them when you measure.
Does GSM affect import duties?
GSM can change the HS subheading but, as of October 2026, not the total US duty on spunlace face towels.

Nonwovens are classified by weight: HTS 5603.92 covers 25–70 g/m² and 5603.93 covers 70–150 g/m². Both are duty-free at the MFN rate and both carry Section 301 List 3 (25%) plus the forced-labor Section 301 duty (12.5%), about 37.5% in total. Fabric cost rises roughly in proportion to GSM, so moving from 60 to 90 gsm adds about 50% more fiber per sheet.

Higher GSM also makes packs heavier and bulkier, which raises freight per sheet and can push cartons over Amazon FBA size or weight limits. For the same reason, a 100-sheet pack of 20×20 cm towels at 60 gsm (about 240 g of fabric) can cost less to ship than a 50-sheet XL box at 80 gsm (about 300 g). Q1What GSM is a thick disposable face towel?+
Around 80–90 gsm. Towels in this band feel closest to a cloth towel when wet and are the norm for XL 10"×12" and 12"×12" formats. Anything from 70 gsm up is usually described as thick; 50–60 gsm is standard.
Q2Is a higher GSM always better?+
No. Higher GSM is thicker and stronger wet, but it costs more, ships heavier and can feel stiff on small sheets. For travel towels or quick makeup removal, 40–60 gsm is often enough; for XL towels used wet over the whole face, 80–90 gsm fits better.
Q3What is the difference between GSM and thickness?+
GSM is weight per area (grams per square meter, ISO 9073-1). Thickness is the height of the fabric in millimeters (ISO 9073-2). Pearl or mesh embossing increases thickness without adding weight, so specify both if “thick” is a selling point.
Q4Does embossing change the GSM?+
No. Embossing reshapes the fabric surface but does not add or remove fiber, so a 60 gsm towel stays 60 gsm. It does change thickness and feel: pearl and mesh textures look thicker than a plain towel of the same weight.
Q5What GSM tolerance should I accept?+
±5% is a common tolerance for spunlace face towels, meaning 57–63 gsm for a 60 gsm spec. Agree the test method (ISO 9073-1), sampling plan and conditioning in writing so both sides measure the same way.
Q6How can I check GSM without a lab?+
Weigh a finished sheet on a kitchen or jewelry scale that reads to 0.01 g, then divide by the sheet area in square meters. A 20×20 cm sheet (0.04 m²) weighing 2.4 g is 60 gsm. Weigh ten sheets together for a more accurate result.
